Nicola Moscufo, PhD
Research Fellow
info
Dr. Nicola Moscufo is a research fellow at the Center for Neurological Imaging. The main focus of his research is to characterize brain magnetic resonance signal abnormalities through advanced imaging techniques, and define their cause-effect relationship with cardiovascular risk factors and with loss of mobility in older people. Other research interests include the etio-pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis, and the role of environmental factors in neurodegenerative diseases.
He graduated with a Laurea in Biological Sciences from the University La Sapienza (Rome, Italy), and has an MA in Environmental Analysis from Boston University (Boston, USA). Dr. Moscufo completed his doctoral training in Biochemistry under the mentorship of Maurizio Tomasi at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (Rome, Italy) where he studied the molecular mechanism of cell-virus membrane fusion during the early stages of infection. He did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Marie Chow in the Biology Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA) on the molecular pathogenesis of Poliovirus, and was research associate in the laboratory of Elliot Androphy at the New England Medical Center and Tufts University (Boston, USA) where he studied replication and transcription regulation in Papillomavirus. Later, as a research scientist at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita in Rome, he was involved in multiple collaborative research projects on various aspects of molecular viral pathogenesis. Dr. Moscufo brings new multi-faceted perspectives to the research projects at CNI.
