Miklos Palotai, M.D. is an Instructor in Radiology at the Center for Neurological Imaging (CNI) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA). Dr. Palotai graduated summa cum laude from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Szeged (Szeged, Hungary) in 2012. He began his research training at the University of Szeged, where he investigated the behavioral and neuromodulatory effects of neuropeptides on stress axis activation, anxiety, depression and memory in rodents. Simultaneously, he completed an 18-month clinical internship in Emergency Medicine. He joined the CNI team in 2014. Dr. Palotai was awarded a McDonald Fellowship (2015-2017) by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) to investigate the association of fatigue with brain changes evidenced by MRI in multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition, CNI received support from NMSS (grant identifier: RG-1501-03141) to further investigate MRI correlates of fatigue in MS (2015-present). The overarching goal of the latter study is to identify MRI predictors of persistent and treatment resistant fatigue in MS patients. As part of this project, Dr. Palotai played a leading role in developing a mobile application to assess fatigue and its confounders, such as depression, anxiety, sleep abnormalities, physical activity and reward imbalance in patients with MS. In addition to MS, Dr. Palotai’s research has focused also on the association of enlarged perivascular spaces with sleep stages, distribution of aquaporin 4 in neuromyelitis optica, as well as viscoelasticity of brain in Alzheimer’s disease and glioblastoma.
